Lake Superior

August 31, 2007

Before we get started…two things…

1. An extra special thank you to Casey for the recommendation to by pass the Canadian Shield in Ontario and travel south of the border. We didn’t listen to you by the way…have you ever drove it? We wonder if you are crazy? Just kidding – we did think the drive to Thunder Bay from Winnipeg was rather redundant, but we have learned that (according to travel books and Jay) the Lake Superior shoreline is listed as one of the world’s most spectacular drives. According to the Lonely Planet – Canada travel book pg 191. “The Lake Superior Shore is one of those drives you must do before you die…” (Not referenced APA style). The drive is beautiful – Jay insisted the kids stop watching National Lapoon’s Vacation in order to watch the lake…for miles and miles and miles.

2.Happy really belated birthday to Richard, happy belated birthday to Travis and happy early birthday to Austin and Page from Ryley and Kassidy respectively.

Now, on with the blog- confessions of a cross country driver- Jay confessed today that he liked the 90km speed limit because he could drive 95km per hour (his normal driving speed) and he would still be speeding (which makes me happy). J He is meeting both our needs. He also let me know that he is really looking forward to being back in Alberta for his sisters 40th birthday and that is the real reason we are coming back late April/Early May. Brotherly love…so sweet hey Leanne?
We just stop along Lake Superior- beautiful. The weather is great – low 20’s and so sunny! We collected some sand (thanks for the idea Diana) and will add to our collection as we travel. Yesterday we mined near Thunder Bay and collected a gallon of Amethyst- seriously a gallon- it is beautiful and we are looking forward to cleaning it and sharing as gifts. Our next stop is Wawa - no that is not baby talk for Water – it is Ojibwe for Wild Goose and it is home to the Giant Goose 9m tall. We will stay overnight and then move on to Sudbury
