Before we get started…two things…
1. An extra special thank you to Casey for the recommendation to by pass the Canadian Shield in Ontario and travel south of the border. We didn’t listen to you by the way…have you ever drove it? We wonder if you are crazy? Just kidding – we did think the drive to Thunder Bay from Winnipeg was rather redundant, but we have learned that (according to travel books and Jay) the Lake Superior shoreline is listed as one of the world’s most spectacular drives. According to the Lonely Planet – Canada travel book pg 191. “The Lake Superior Shore is one of those drives you must do before you die…” (Not referenced APA style). The drive is beautiful – Jay insisted the kids stop watching National Lapoon’s Vacation in order to watch the lake…for miles and miles and miles.
2.Happy really belated birthday to Richard, happy belated birthday to Travis and happy early birthday to Austin and Page from Ryley and Kassidy respectively.
Now, on with the blog- confessions of a cross country driver- Jay confessed today that he liked the 90km speed limit because he could drive 95km per hour (his normal driving speed) and he would still be speeding (which makes me happy). J He is meeting both our needs. He also let me know that he is really looking forward to being back in Alberta for his sisters 40th birthday and that is the real reason we are coming back late April/Early May. Brotherly love…so sweet hey Leanne?
We just stop along Lake Superior- beautiful. The weather is great – low 20’s and so sunny! We collected some sand (thanks for the idea Diana) and will add to our collection as we travel. Yesterday we mined near Thunder Bay and collected a gallon of Amethyst- seriously a gallon- it is beautiful and we are looking forward to cleaning it and sharing as gifts. Our next stop is Wawa - no that is not baby talk for Water – it is Ojibwe for Wild Goose and it is home to the Giant Goose 9m tall. We will stay overnight and then move on to Sudbury

Thunder Bay
Wednesday, August 29, 2007
We have just settled into a campsite outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario- Mirror Lake Campground. We are not sure if it is nice or not because we arrived in the darkness. The camp host is quite a character (we aren’t sure whether his spirit is pure or brought on by other liquid spirits). Needless to say he waited up for us, showed us to our campsite, offered to bring us wood at 10:30pm, and thanked God we made it here alive. The Terry Fox Memorial site is nearby and tomorrow we may go looking for Amethyst in one of the local mines. We left Winnipeg this morning around 11:30 am, after a tour of the MTS Centre ~ a very nice facility. We survived two nights sleeping on the streets of Winnipeg (in our holiday trailer) – although we are sorry (for Jason) and relieved (for ourselves) to report that Jason’s vehicle and not our trailer got broken into last night. Can you imagine the reaction of our kids if someone broke into our little home on wheels??? Not Good!
We plan on slowing down a bit during this Ontario stretch as we do not want to arrive in Metropolis of Toronto during the last long weekend of summer. We are taking time to smell the roses or road side construction…whichever. We am please to report that we have traveled over 3000 km and haven’t had a single fight…ok at least not one in which every member of our little family has been involved in. Jay has been doing all the driving and doing a darn good job…so far! We have been learning a great deal about Canada and are already appreciating the vastness of our country…although Ryley is wishing that it wasn’t quite so big-he had something the size of Italy in mind. We are attaching a picture of the view of the Canadian Shield as seen from the inside of the truck- we saw the same view for hours and hours. It wasn’t what we expected, but quite nice just the same. Also attached is the kids at the two borders crossings of the past two days.

Welcome to Winnipeg
We arrived in Winnipeg last night. We settled in nicely on the street in front of Jason and Michelle's house (Jay's cousin). It was nice to visit relatives and meet the newest member of the family. Thanks to everyone for helping us celebrate Kassidy's birthday when we arrived...everyone enjoys cake at 10:30 at night! We spent today at The Forks - a very interesting and historic area of Winnipeg. The kids enjoyed the Children's Museum-especially the tree fort area. The evening was spent enjoying the comforts of a house, as it will be quite awhile before we will be able to again. Ryley went off to the arena tonight to watch hockey and entertain the baby. :) After a quick tour of the local arena (home of the Moose) in the morning we will be heading to the Thunder Bay, Ontario area to visit and enjoy the Terry Fox Memorial and Lake Mirror.
Cheers...I know not very Manitobian is it?

A Stopover
| We have made it to Southey...soon to be our new community. On our way here we managed to stop in Vegreville to check out the giant Ukranian Easter Egg (A dream come true for Triana). Jay also managed to miss hitting a skunk as we approached Craven...however...the skunk did NOT avoid hitting the back of our holiday trailer with a little skunk scent on our way over top him-sure glad the kids sleep at that end :). We have been working hard to renovate and clean our new house in preparation for the people who will rent it while we are away. The kids have been working really hard and have had some terrific help from the neighbourhood! We took some time out to visit Regina with our Southey friends and we realized what a small world it is when we ran into a fellow Albertan in a restaurant. Thanks for connecting with us and we will keep you posted! |

The Last Few Days
Only days now until we set off on our adventure. The last few weeks have been filled with lots of wonderful people and great memories. Thank you to everyone who attended our going party, those who went camping with us, friends who hosted us as guests, and everyone who welcomed us back into your lives at our High School Reunion (1985-1990). As we have been sharing our plans - people have been letting us know of terrific spots to stop and describing communities across Canada and the United States that have welcoming and friendly folk. I believe that our friends and community must rank up there with the best of them because the generousity and kindness we have been shown has been OUTSTANDING! Sincerely... thank you!
